Simulation and analysis of the solidification characteristics of a Si-Mo ductile iron

High silicon and molybdenum ductile cast irons (Si-Mo alloys) are commonly used as exhaust manifold materials suffering from high temperature-oxidation thermal-mechanical fatigue. The structural integrity of Si-Mo alloys under these service conditions is attributed to their microstructure consisting spheroidal graphite Mo-rich carbide embedded in a ferritic matrix. However, the structure includes also pearlite having detrimental effect on mechanical properties, therefore matrix needs be heat treated. In this study, solidification iron was investigated using (i) thermodynamic kinetic calculations by Thermo-Calc DICTRA software (ii) thermal analysis order reveal out sequence phase formation transformations during (iii) microanalysis energy dispersive spectrometer determine elemental segregation compare with calculated values. solidified characterized all microstructural features were specified.
